The 5th Annual Backstreet Park Summer Concert Series features Sonny and the Strangers. The concert runs from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, on Friday, August 26. Come by and enjoy this free concert in downtown West Jefferson, NC.
Open Air Market Features Sonny & The Strangers

Be in downtown Wilkesboro on Friday, September 16 starting at 6-9pm at the Open Air Market to hear Sonny and the Strangers as the featured band.Historic Downtown Wilkesboro’s Open Air Market’s focus is on supporting and sustaining the local farm and artisan community. The market is held every Friday from 4-8 pm, from May 20th – October 21. Admission is free. Once a month, an expanded version of the Open Air Market will be offered, known as the Third Friday event series. The Third Friday events will feature juried art, children’s activities, informational booths, food, beverages, wine & beer, and the Open Air Market that will offer “fresh from the farm” fruits, vegetables, plants, and crafts. Admission to the Third Friday event series is also free.

Sonny and the Strangers at ChickenFest 2010

Sonny and the Strangers brought their music down the mountain to Wilkesboro NC’s Chickenfest Celebration.
“A Tribute to Drake Walsh was held Saturday evening during the sixth annual ChickenFest. The festival drew the largest attendance ever.
A standing room only crowd came to The Record Park for the tribute that was the finale of Saturday’s music.”

Who Are the Strangers?

Here’s a little biographical information on a couple of the Strangers:
Michael Earp, Bass Guitar and Vocals
Along with Sonny and the Strangers, Michael plays full-time at Oak Level Baptist Church. He also plays with the Four Wheel Drive Band, playing classic rock/country/blues. He played seven years with Skipper’s Wheel, playing Americana/country. They played at the Yadkin Valley Wine Festival and MerleFest in 2007. In 2004, he played with Jimmie W. Johnson and the Spirit of Elvis Show at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, NC. Michael played thirteen years with the STA Band, a top 40/beach band, and seven years with the Southern Taste Band, playing southern rock. After being “on the road” for 20 years, he has settled down in the Foothills of North Carolina, still pursuing his passion for music on stage and in the studio.

Sonny has been a musician since his high school days. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and served in Vietnam in 1966. Sonny performs at venues in and around the High Country; he’s often found at Frasers Restaurant, and has performed at various ‘fests including Oliver and Chicken with his signature blend of classic rock and folk.
Sonny and the Strangers is also the name of a CD that he has recorded recently. As a 6 year cancer survivor of stage 4 cancer, Sonny has dedicated the music on this CD to all Vietnam veterans and to cancer survivors. A portion of sale proceeds will benefit these persons. Sonny and The Strangers Perform at Oliverfest

Sonny and The Strangers at Oliver Fest
OliverFest is a free street festival celebrating the music of William “Oliver” Swofford and the Summer of ’69. The event featured music from the era along with other attractions.
Swofford, who died of cancer in 2000, was a native of North Wilkesboro. He recorded the chart-topping hit “Good Morning Starshine” in 1969 and the subsequent hit “Jean.”
Sonny and the Strangers performed with Beatles tribute band Britishmania Four Wheel Drive and Crusher Run on July 17.
The band made the cover of the Record of Wilkes.
